According to a new study, Hormone
Replacement Therapy (HRT) is more dangerous than medical professionals anticipated,
because of the increased risk of breast cancer.
First, an explanation of why people use Hormone Replacement Therapy is in
order. HRT has been used in post-menopausal women for some time now as medical
professionals believe it safely relieved hot flashes, night sweats, and other
problems associated with fluctuating hormones. The idea was simple - balance
the hormones using a combination of natural and artificially produced hormones.
Years later, what scientists found shocked the medical community. After the
Women's Health Initiative (WHI) performed a study on over 16,000 women from
varous backgrounds, they found an increased risk of breast cancer, strokes,
blod clots, and no beneficial preventative effects against stroke and some
forms of heart disease.
Upon hearing this news, many women went off Hormone Replacement Therapy, which
then led to added problems, such as a significant hormonal imbalance, greater
hot flashes, and even sexually-related problems. The director of the WHI said
"Women with a uterus who are currently taking
estrogen plus progestin should have a serious talk
with their doctors to see if they should continue
it. If they are taking this hormone combination
for short-term relief of symptoms, it may
be reasonable to continue, since the benefits are
likely to outweigh the risks. Longer term
use or use for disease prevention must be re-evaluated,
given the multiple adverse effects noted
in WHI."
If you are currently on Hormone Replacement
Therapy, we strongly urge you to consider the
fact that many medical professionals associated
with this study suggest that HRT risks outweigh
the benefits.
